Baseball Recap: Saturday's Defeat Ends Berwyn/Cicero Morton's Winning Streak

Berwyn/Cicero Morton dropped their record down to 9-22 on Saturday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They came up short against the Downers Grove North Trojans, falling 12-4. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Mustangs of the 11-10 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2023.

Jhon Garces and Johangel Castrillo stepped up to the plate in a big way. Garces went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and two doubles, while Castrillo got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayden Vega, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.

As for Downers Grove North, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 24-6 record this season. Considering they have won 11 games by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

On Downers Grove North's side, Ryan Noonan looked comfortable as he pitched four innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. What's more, Noonan posted two strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March.

On the hitting side, Downers Grove North got a massive performance out of Sean Cabaj, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI Cabaj has posted since back in April. Brady Schallmoser was another key player, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Berwyn/Cicero Morton will venture away from home to face off against Proviso East at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Mustangs are facing the Pirates at the right time seeing as the Pirates are stuck on a 21-game losing streak. As for Downers Grove North, they will head out on the road to square off against York at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
