Baseball Recap: Dumont Comes Up Short

Dumont had lost three straight on the road, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 5-7 to make it four. They took a 6-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cliffside Park Raiders. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last six times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Dumont got a good showing from Isaac Funez, who tossed 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.

At the plate, Dumont saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was James Sutera, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double. That double marked the first that Sutera has hit this season.

As for Cliffside Park, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games.

On Cliffside Park's side, John Raftopolous made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed seven innings while giving up three earned runs off seven hits. Raftopolous has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI. That's the most runs he has posted over his last 11 matches.

In other batting news, Victor Freytas was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jayden Akkus, who went 1-for-2 with one triple and one RBI.

While Dumont had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
