Basketball Recap: Avon Falls Short of Pike in the Playoffs

Avon and Pike squared off in some playoff action on Saturday, but Avon had to settle for second. They took a 69-61 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Pike Red Devils. The Orioles have struggled against the Red Devils recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.

Despite the loss, Avon still got an impressive performance from Aniah Smith, who almost dropped a double-double on 25 points and nine boards. Smith also grabbed five steals, which is notable because Avon is 7-3 when she posts at least five steals, but 4-10 otherwise. Soryah Hart was another key player, putting up ten points and eight rebounds.

Even though they lost, Avon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in three consecutive matches.

Avon's loss dropped their record down to 11-13. As for Pike, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 15 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 18-6 record this season.

Avon does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Pike, they will square off against Franklin Central at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a three-game winning streak alive.
