Basketball Game Preview: Athens Hornets vs. Canton Eagles

Athens hasn't had much luck against Canton recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Athens Hornets will be playing in front of their home fans against the Canton Eagles at 6:15 p.m.

Last Friday, Athens was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 40-35 to Brownsboro. While losing is never fun, the Hornets can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 520th, while the Bears are ranked 256th).

Meanwhile, Canton had already won eight in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 29.1 points) and they went ahead and made it nine on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Yellowjackets 77-14. The Eagles have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 12 games by 21 points or more this season.

Canton pushed their record up to 26-5 with the win, which was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 26.1 points per game. As for Athens, they now have a losing record at 13-14.
