Preview: Lamar Vikings vs. Haltom Buffalos
The Lamar Vikings will head out on the road to face off against the Haltom Buffalos at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Lamar is hoping to put an end to a six-game streak of away losses.
Lamar suffered their biggest defeat since December 13, 2023 on Friday. They were dealt a 72-35 defeat at the hands of South Grand Prairie. Lamar has not had much luck with South Grand Prairie recently, as the team's come up short the last seven times they've met.
Meanwhile, Haltom unfortunately witnessed the end of their five-game winning streak on Friday. They fell just short of Grand Prairie by a score of 54-51. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Haltom came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 122nd, while Grand Prairie is ranked 260th).
Haltom's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Kuol Atak, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and ten rebounds, and Baron Smith jr who scored 18 points along with seven rebounds. That was a full 37.3% of Haltom's points, marking the sixth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Lamar has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost six of their last seven contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-15 record this season. As for Haltom, their defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 17-8.
Things could have been worse for Lamar, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 69-51 loss to Haltom in their previous meeting back in December of 2023. Can Lamar avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
