Softball Recap: Cibola Takes Down Ranked Piedra Vista

Cibola faced Piedra Vista in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Cougars sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 win over the Panthers. The victory was nothing new for the Cougars as they're now sitting on four straight.

Gabrielle Moncada spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and two unearned) runs on five hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Cibola saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Vanessa Romero, who went 2-for-5 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Another was Ashley Varela, who went 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI.

Cibola pushed their record up to 19-4 with the win, which was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Piedra Vista, with the loss, they broke their four-game winning streak and moved their record to 15-7-1.

Coming up, Cibola will challenge Rio Rancho at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Rams have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.55 runs per game on average), something the Cougars will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Piedra Vista, they will take on Cleveland at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
