Beyond the Record Book: Single season rushing yards

By Kevin Askeland Sep 17, 2013, 1:00am

More than 100 running backs have rushed for 3,000 yards in a season, yet do not have their name in the national record book.

Kevin Parks of West Rowan (Mt. Ulla, N.C.) ran for 3,794 yards in 2009, but you won't find his name in the NFHS Record Book.

When it comes to national records for single season passing yardage, the record book has gone through a complete overhaul due to the prolific passing attacks using the read-option over the past decade.

But make no mistake, the running game is still a big factor in high school football.

One only has to look at the performance of Yulee's Derrick Henry, who last year broke the 60-year-old career rushing record of 11,232 yards held by legendary Ken Hall of Sugarland (Texas). In breaking the career record, Henry rushed for 4,265 yards alone last year - the third-highest single season mark in national history.

Also consider that a reported 18 running backs last year rushed for more than 3,000 yards during the season. The year before there were 17. Those are easily the highest totals for any two seasons, based on totals presented in the National Federation of High Schools Record Book and additional research using the MaxPreps leaderboards.

See the MaxPreps feature on John Giananntonio, who holds NFHS records for rushing in a game and a season

So while the running game appears to be alive and well, there are still a number of running backs with over 3,000 yards in a season who aren't recognized in the NFHS Record Book. Once again, coaches are encouraged to report their records to the NFHS with proper documentation so that their players can receive the proper recognition.

The NFHS Record Book lists 78 players who have rushed for more than 3,000 yards in a single season. Based on research using the MaxPreps leaderboards, state association websites and other high school football websites, we at MaxPreps have come up with 108 more that could be added (there could be more).

You can find the NFHS Record Book list here. We've included below the missing totals as well as where they can be located.
