Basketball Game Preview: St. Albans Red Dragons vs. Huntington Highlanders

The St. Albans Red Dragons will challenge the Huntington Highlanders at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. St. Albans will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.

St. Albans is headed into the game after thoroughly thrashing South Charleston: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that St. Albans blew South Charleston out of the water with a 70-9 final score. The Red Dragons have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five contests by 21 points or more this season.

St. Albans' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Samyah Riggan led the charge by going 7 for 14 to rack up 17 points in addition to eight steals and six boards. The match was Riggan's third in a row with at least 17 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaycee Elzy, who went 8 of 16 en route to 20 points and four steals.

St. Albans smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards every time they've taken the court this season.

Meanwhile, Huntington came up short against Parkersburg on Tuesday, falling 63-41. While losing is never fun, the Highlanders can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' West Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 55th, while the Big Reds are ranked seventh).

St. Albans' victory bumped their record up to 11-3. As for Huntington, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-12.

St. Albans came out on top in a nail-biter against Huntington in their previous matchup back in December of 2024, sneaking past 55-52. Does St. Albans have another victory up their sleeve, or will Huntington turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
