Baseball Recap: Cardinal Newman Comes Up Short

Cardinal Newman had lost five straight at home, but on Wednesday they dropped down to 6-8 to make it six. They came up short against the West Broward Bobcats, falling 12-2. The Crusaders were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bobcats apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2025.

Cardinal Newman got a good showing from Toby Glass, who pitched 2.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. That one earned run gave Glass a new career-low.

On the hitting side, Cardinal Newman saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gianluca Luciano, who went 2-for-3 with one run.

As for West Broward, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 10-3. Considering they have won eight games by more than six runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

On West Broward's side, Ivan Sabater looked comfortable as he struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. Sabater has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Manuel Sarcos, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, six RBI, and one double. Those six RBI gave him a new career-high. Joey Gagliano also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Cardinal Newman will welcome Belen Jesuit at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The Wolverines' pitching crew has only allowed 2.4 runs per game this season, so the Crusaders' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for West Broward, they will host Miller School of Albemarle at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
