Basketball Recap: Animas Comes Up Short at Home Against Lordsburg

Animas unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They were beaten by the Lordsburg Mavericks 75-39 on Tuesday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Panthers of the 65-31 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in January.

Animas' loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Koltyn Nixon, who shot 53% from the field to rack up 19 points along with eight boards and five steals. Another player making a difference was Levi Kellogg, who posted 12 points and six rebounds.

The win got Lordsburg back to even at 1-1.

Animas will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Carrizozo at 5:30 p.m. on January 8, 2026. As for Lordsburg, they will square off against Silver at 2:30 p.m. on the 11th.
