Basketball Recap: Curtis Baptist's Winning Streak Snapped at Six Games

After flying high against Cross two weeks ago, Curtis Baptist came back down to earth. The Curtis Baptist Crusaders'2024 ended with a 66-50 loss against the Charleston Math & Science Riptide on Friday. While losing is never fun, the Crusaders can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 204th in Georgia, while the Riptide are ranked 97th in South Carolina).

Curtis Baptist lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Brayden Husband, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten boards. The match was Husband's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Wiltrez (Trez) Mincey was another key player, dropping a double-double on 12 points and 12 boards.

Charleston Math & Science's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ben Gilliard, who posted 23 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Gilliard is crushing it when it comes to points: he's scored at least 15 every time he's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Zion King, who had 18 points in addition to five assists and three steals.

Curtis Baptist moved to 7-5 with that defeat, which also ended their six-game winning streak. As for Charleston Math & Science, the win was the tenth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 10-1.

Curtis Baptist didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 56-50 loss against Palmetto Christian Academy on the 28th. As for Charleston Math & Science, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 76-37 defeat against Paintsville on the 28th.
