Softball Recap: Somersworth Comes Up Short

Somersworth fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Trinity on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Pioneers by a score of 8-6. The Toppers' defeat continues a trend for the squad, making it six in a row.

Kylie Pettengill put in work while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over eight innings while giving up three earned (and five unearned) runs off 11 hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs.

In other batting news, Aby Lambert was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. She also put up an RBI, which was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Danna Dyer, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI.

Somersworth's loss dropped their record down to 3-8. As for Trinity, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-7 record this season.

Somersworth will welcome Hillsboro-Deering at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Hillcats have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.22 runs per game on average), something the Toppers will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Trinity, they will venture away from home to square off against Prospect Mountain at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Timberwolves will roll in looking for their 16th straight victory, something the Pioneers surely won't give up without a fight.
