Rincon/University has gone a perfect 3-0 against Sahuaro recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Rangers are taking a road trip to take on the Cougars at 5:00 p.m.
Rincon/University is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Salpointe Catholic just ended the team's three-game winning streak on Wednesday. They fell just short of the Lancers by a score of 3-2.
Rincon/University actually scored more points across those five sets (103-100), but sadly they still had to settle for second. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-21, 16-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-13.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Nic Sanchez, who had 20 digs and two assists.
Sahuaro not only won on Wednesday, but they posted their biggest win since March 24th. They put the hurt on Tucson High Magnet School with a sharp 3-0 victory.
The 3-0 score doesn't really reflect how close the match was: every set was decided by three points or less. The match finished with set scores of 25-23, 25-22, 25-23.
Rincon/University's loss dropped their record down to 12-5. As for Sahuaro, their win bumped their record up to 9-10.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's game: Rincon/University hasn't let much over the net this season, having averaged 6.2 blocks per game. It's a different story for Sahuaro, though, as they've been averaging only 1.3 blocks. Given Rincon/University's sizable advantage in that area, the Cougars will need to find a way to close that gap.
Rincon/University took their victory against Sahuaro when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 3-0 score. Will the Rangers repeat their success, or do the Cougars have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
