Cheshire Academy is a perfect 3-0 against Millbrook School since April of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Cats will head out to face off against the Mustangs at 2:00 p.m. Cheshire Academy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.9 runs per game this season.
Cheshire Academy is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Connecticut's top teams: Canterbury School, who was ranked fourth at the time (Cheshire Academy was ranked third). The Cats walked away with a 6-2 victory over the Saints on Friday. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last six times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Will Margolies and C.J. DiBenedetto dominated on the mound. Margolies tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit, while DiBenedetto tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. DiBenedetto has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one hit any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Chase Mendela, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Cillian Morrissey, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.
Cheshire Academy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .414. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Canterbury School only posted a batting average of .091.
Meanwhile, Millbrook School came tearing into Friday's contest with three straight wins , and they left with even more momentum. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Highlanders 5-3. While the Mustangs didn't have the best season last year (they finished 6-10), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Cheshire Academy pushed their record up to 15-1 with the victory, which was their 17th straight at home dating back to last season. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.4 runs on average over those games. As for Millbrook School, their record is now 6-2.
Cheshire Academy came out on top in a nail-biter against Millbrook School in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, sneaking past 3-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cats since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
