Baseball Game Preview: Walker Wildcats vs. East Ascension Spartans

The Walker Wildcats will take on the East Ascension Spartans at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Walker has four straight wins, East Ascension has five straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

While Walker's victory against Denham Springs wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Wildcats had just enough and edged out the Yellowjackets 3-2.

Meanwhile, East Ascension fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Dutchtown on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Griffins by a score of 2-1.

Darrin Magee spent all 7.2 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on six hits.

On the hitting side, East Ascension saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brennan Cryer, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.

Walker's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 21-8. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.4 runs over those games. As for East Ascension, their loss dropped their record down to 14-18-1.

Walker took their win against East Ascension when the teams last played back in March of 2024 by a conclusive 12-1 score. Will the Wildcats repeat their success, or do the Spartans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
