Basketball Recap: Box Elder Takes a Loss

Box Elder was the 47-39 winner over Woods Cross when they last played one another back in January of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Box Elder Bees opened the new year with a less-than-successful 57-48 loss to the Woods Cross Wildcats. The Bees have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

When it comes to explaining why Box Elder lost on Friday, don't look at Jocelyn Vranes. Despite the final result, she went 7 for 15 on her way to 20 points. The contest was Vranes' fourth in a row with at least ten points. Emma Nelson was another key player, putting up 12 points.

Kiyomi Tauataina had an outrageously good game for Woods Cross as she almost dropped a double-double on 20 points and nine boards. The dominant performance gave Tauataina a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaylee Abell, who went 6 of 12 on her way to 13 points.

Box Elder's defeat dropped their record down to 1-10. As for Woods Cross, the win (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 8-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Box Elder will head out to square off against Viewmont at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Viewmont is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.1 points per game this season. As for Woods Cross, they will venture away from home to challenge Clearfield at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
