High school football records: Best single-game passing performance in all 50 states

By Kevin Askeland Oct 1, 2020, 3:45pm

First done in 1966, 92 quarterbacks have thrown for more than 600 yards since 2000.

Jimmy Hogan of Newport News (Va.) was way ahead of his time. A senior in 1966, Hogan threw for 636 yards in a 60-13 win over Denbigh to become the first high school quarterback to throw for over 600 yards in a game.

His "Beamonesque" performance stood as a national record for over 25 years and still ranks as the best single-game passing yardage total in Virginia, according to MaxPreps' list of the top high school football passing yardage performances in every state.

Hogan's tremendous effort occurred two years before U.S. long jumper Bob Beamon covered 29 feet, 2 inches at the Mexico City Olympics. He never came close to that jump again, and neither did anyone else for well over 25 years. His performance was so outrageous that all such outliers were known as "Beamonesque."

Hogan, too, was "Beamonesque" in that his record did not fall until 1991 when Jesse Watts of Stark (Sheldon, Ky.) broke the mark with 651 yards in 1991. Prior to 2000, six quarterbacks had thrown for over 600 yards. Over the past 20 years, however, 92 have accomplished the feat. Many of those passers can be found on the list of top passing performances in each state.

Among the novelties on the list:

• Tucker Israel of Lake Nona (Orlando, Fla.) is the only quarterback to throw for over 600 yards in back-to-back games. He threw for 659 yards one week and 630 the next.

• Matt Miller of Dubois set the Pennsylvania state record in his very first varsity game, throwing for 787 yards as a sophomore.

• Brian Kaufman of Hill-Murray (Maplewood, Minn.) broke the state record for passing attempts with 83 when he threw for 555 yards to set the Minnesota state record. Whose record did he break? His own, which he set the week before with a 73-attempt performance.

• Jeff Skemp of Southwestern (Wis.) is the tallest quarterback to hold a state single game passing yardage record. He was 6-foot-9 as a starting quarterback. He eventually grew to 6-foot-10.
