Football Recap: O'neill Skates Past Scotus with Ease

O'Neill had won five straight at home, but on Friday they bumped up to 8-0 to make it six. They breezed past the Scotus Shamrocks to the tune of 37-7. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matchups by 22 points or more this season.

O'Neill's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Braxen Eichelberger led the charge by rushing for 152 yards and one touchdown on only ten carries, while also picking up 45 receiving yards. Those 152 rushing yards gave Eichelberger a new career-high. Turner Heiss was in the mix as well, providing O'Neill with two TDs.

O'Neill's run defense was locked in: Scotus could only muster 1.7 yards per carry. The team can thank Grady Welke for the heroic effort on defense: he. The dominant display was nothing new: O'Neill has now limited their opponent to fewer and fewer yards per carry in three consecutive contests.

O'Neill's defense didn't let the opposing QB, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for three sacks. Leading the way was Welke with two.

As for Scotus, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-6. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 7-0 Lakeview (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 100% over those games).

When it comes to explaining why Scotus lost, don't look at Brody Lindhorst. Despite the final result, he rushed for 56 yards and one score on only five carries.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. O'Neill will challenge rival Lakeview at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (the Eagles 13.5, the Vikings 7.4) so any points scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Scotus is set to take on their familiar foe Wayne at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
