Baseball Recap: Swain County Takes a Loss

The Swain County Maroon Devils came up short against the East Henderson Eagles on Wednesday, falling 16-9.

Rowan Ellis and Gavin Cunningham did some serious damage despite the final result: Ellis got on base in three of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases, while Cunningham scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3. Cunningham has become a key player for Swain County: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 4-5 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Forrest Shuler, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Swain County has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-6 record this season. As for East Henderson, their victory ended an eight-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-10.

Coming up, Swain County will host Andrews at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. As for East Henderson, they will challenge Pisgah at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Bears' pitching crew has only allowed 4.1 runs per game this season, so the Eagles' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
