Football Recap: Healdsburg Comes Up Short

Healdsburg extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 16 on Friday, dropping them down to 0-9. They were beaten by the Sonoma Valley Dragons 70-6. While losing is never fun, the Greyhounds can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 997th, while the Dragons are ranked 409th).

When it comes to explaining why Healdsburg lost, don't look at Hayden Mariani. Despite the final result, he picked up 101 receiving yards and one touchdown. Mariani also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, making three total tackles and defending one pass.

As for Sonoma Valley, the victory (which was their ninth in a row) raised their record to 9-1. Those wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 47.3 points over those games.

Sonoma Valley's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Cayden Waldrop led the charge by rushing for 108 yards and four TDs on only nine carries. Waldrop has been hot, having posted two or more rushing touchdowns the last seven times he's played. Another player making a difference was Dalan Lopata, who threw for 290 yards and four touchdowns on only 19 passes.

Healdsburg does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Sonoma Valley, they will take on St. Helena at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Saints' defense has only allowed 14.3 points per game this season, so the Dragons' offense will have their work cut out for them.
