Recap: Archbishop Carroll Lions vs. Saint John Paul the Great Catholic Wolves
The Archbishop Carroll Lions put another one in the bag on Wednesday to keep their perfect season alive. They really took it to Saint John Paul the Great Catholic for the full four quarters, racking up a 75-22 win at home. Archbishop Carroll might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team's won five matches by 34 points or more this season.
Archbishop Carroll's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Heidi Williams, who scored 21 points along with nine rebounds and four steals. Those 21 points set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Nyair McCoy, who scored 14 points along with eight steals and seven assists.
Despite the loss, Saint John Paul the Great Catholic still got an impressive performance from Nina Velandria, who scored 14 points.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Saint John Paul the Great Catholic struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only two offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Archbishop Carroll's win was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 7-0. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.9 points per game. As for Saint John Paul the Great Catholic, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-6.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Archbishop Carroll will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against St. Frances Academy at 6:00 p.m. on December 28th. St. Frances Academy will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in their respective state's rankings (they are ranked 47th in Maryland, while Archbishop Carroll is ranked ninth in District of Columbia). Saint John Paul the Great Catholic will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Trinity Episcopal at 6:00 p.m. on January 3, 2024.
