Basketball Preview: Newman Greenies vs. Lutcher Bulldogs

Newman has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on the Lutcher Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the pair will really light up the scoreboard.

Last Thursday, Newman didn't have too much trouble with the Tigers at home as they won 68-53. Given Newman's advantage in MaxPreps' Louisiana basketball rankings (they are ranked ninth, while the Tigers are ranked 116th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Newman got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Todd Jones out in front who dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds. Jones hasn't dropped below ten rebounds for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Tayden Langdon, who scored 16 points.

Meanwhile, Lutcher took their game at home on Friday with ease, bagging a 74-38 victory over the Gators. The win made it back-to-back wins for Lutcher.

Newman pushed their record up to 13-10 with that win, which was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.9 points per game. As for Lutcher, their win bumped their record up to 11-13.

Newman strolled past the Bulldogs in their previous matchup back in February of 2023 by a score of 69-52. The rematch might be a little tougher for Newman since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
