Softball Game Preview: William Byrd Terriers vs. Staunton River Golden Eagles

William Byrd is 1-9 against Staunton River since April of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Terriers will be playing in front of their home fans against the Golden Eagles at 7:00 p.m.

William Byrd is headed into Tuesday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Monday. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 10-6 to Pulaski County, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior.

Meanwhile, Staunton River entered their tilt with Northside on Friday with five consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with six. They never let the Vikings get on the board and left with an 11-0 win. Considering the Golden Eagles have won six contests by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Emma Alcorn looked comfortable as she pitched 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Payton Chewning was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Ava Overstreet, who went 1-for-2 with one home run and two RBI.

Staunton River was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .464. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Staunton River's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-2. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.3 runs over those games. As for William Byrd, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-7.
