Softball Recap: Morton Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Joy Lewis and Isi Castillo

Morton extended their losing streak to four on Friday, dropping their season record down to 8-14 in the process. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 8-3 to Yazoo County, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. Morton was not able to repeat the success they had when they faced Yazoo County earlier this season, when they won 5-3.

Isi Castillo and Joy Lewis did some serious damage despite the final result: Castillo went 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base, while Lewis went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

As for Yazoo County, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 17 of their last 18 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 21-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.4 runs over those games.

On Yazoo County's side, Lilly Andrews made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up three earned runs off six hits (and not a single walk). Andrews has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in 14 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Anna Kiley Leal, who went 1-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three RBI. That home run was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Minely Crozier, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, one double, and one RBI.

Morton has already played their next game, a 7-2 victory against Richland on the 15th. As for Yazoo County, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 7-0 win against Mendenhall on the 14th.
