Basketball Recap: West Lafayette Takes a Loss

If West Lafayette was riding high fresh off their 46-22 takedown of Tipton last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The West Lafayette Red Devils were dealt a 71-32 defeat at the hands of the McCutcheon Mavericks on Tuesday. The Red Devils were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Mavericks apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why West Lafayette lost, don't look at Molly Andrew. Despite the final result, she posted 15 points and six boards. That was a full 46.9% of West Lafayette's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's put up more than a third of the team's points. May Sandberg also deserves some recognition as she grabbed her first steal of the season.

McCutcheon found their leader in sophomore Lillie Graves, who went 15 of 20 en route to 30 points and five steals. Graves' evening made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Keara Lipscomb-Allen, who went 6 for 9 on her way to 13 points and four steals.

West Lafayette's defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 6-15. As for McCutcheon, the victory was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 21-3.

West Lafayette has already played their next matchup (against Harrison), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. McCutcheon will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Kokomo at 7:30 p.m. on February 7th. One thing working in McCutcheon's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last five contests.
