Basketball Game Preview: Amherst County Lancers vs. Altavista Colonels

The Amherst County Lancers will head out on the road to face off against the Altavista Colonels at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Amherst County is looking for their season's first victory.

It's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 72-28, which was the final score in Amherst County's tilt against Salem on Tuesday. While losing is never fun, the Lancers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 355th, while the Spartans are ranked 45th).

Meanwhile, Altavista was beaten by Nelson County 89-60 on Tuesday. The Colonels were up 29-14 in the first quarter but couldn't hold on to the lead.

Amherst County's loss dropped their record down to 0-12. As for Altavista, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-6 record this season.

Amherst County came up short against Altavista in their previous matchup back in December of 2024, falling 73-67. Can Amherst County avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
