No. 21 Monarchs knock off No. 6 Jackrabbits in surprising fashion; Four nationally-ranked teams capture state titles.
It's hard to classify any win by No. 21
Mater Dei (Santa Ana) – arguably Southern California's most storied high school program – as a shocker.
But the way the Monarchs (30-3) ended the season of No. 6
Long Beach Poly (Long Beach) in the CIF Division I regional semifinals Saturday night was surprising, to say the least.

Mater Dei's super junior duo of
Katin Reinhardt and
Xavier Johnson combined for 39 points while racing past the Jackrabbits (31-2) for a 72-55 win. Head coach Gary McKnight's club advances to the regional finals where they get a rematch with
Centennial (Corona), who knocked off the Monarchs in last week's Southern Section Division I-AA semifinals.
Centennial piled up the points in a 94-81 win over No. 18
Taft (Woodland Hills). The Huskies have downed three of SoCal's traditional powers over the past 12 days, beating two-time defending state champion
Westchester (Los Angeles) in addition to Mater Dei and Taft.
