Basketball Recap: Sam Greer's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Archbishop Hoban over Mckinley

Archbishop Hoban has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They took a hard 78-64 fall against the McKinley Bulldogs on Friday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Knights of the 62-60 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in January of 2024.

Archbishop Hoban's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sam Greer, who went 6-for-8 to rack up 12 points and three blocks. Another player making a difference was Deron Jennings, who went 6-for-13 en route to 14 points.

McKinley was led to victory by Reed Sims Jr and Anthony Chavers. Sims Jr dropped a double-double with 27 points and ten boards, while Chavers went 8-for-14 on his way to 18 points in addition to eight rebounds and three steals. The match was Sims Jr's third in a row with at least 17 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayveion Carter, who posted nine points.

Archbishop Hoban's defeat dropped their record down to 17-5. As for McKinley, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 16-5 record this season.

Coming up, Archbishop Hoban will take on Midview at 7:00 p.m. on February 22nd. Archbishop Hoban is facing Midview at the right time seeing as Midview is stuck on a nine-game losing streak. As for McKinley, they have already played their next game, a 52-47 victory against St. Vincent-St. Mary on the 15th.
