Baseball Recap: Rio Grande City Drops Season-High Score on Mission Veterans Memorial

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Rio Grande City). They came out on top against the Mission Veterans Memorial Patriots by a score of 12-7 on Friday. This was a revenge game for the Rattlers: when they faced off against the Patriots last Tuesday, they had to take a 7-4 loss.

Evan Marroquin was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off five hits. What's more, he posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in February. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 3-for-4. He also hit a double, marking his first of the season.

In other batting news, Robert Perez was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with two triples, two runs, and one RBI. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in hits. Aaron Benavidez was another key player, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two doubles.

Rio Grande City was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive matches.

The victory got Rio Grande City back to even at 6-6. As for Mission Veterans Memorial, their defeat ended a six-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 9-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Rio Grande City will square off against Palmview at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average, (Palmview 2.5, Rio Grande City 2.8) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Mission Veterans Memorial, they will face off against Mission at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
