Softball Recap: Broughton Comes Up Short

Broughton had lost seven straight at home, but on Friday they dropped down to 3-12 to make it eight. They lost 12-5 to the Athens Drive Jaguars. The Capitals were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Jaguars earlier this season, when they won 9-2.

Louise Hatch made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one stolen base and one RBI. That stolen base marked the first that she has snagged this season. Lillian O'Neill was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs.

As for Athens Drive, their victory ended a 12-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 4-13. Their offense finally found a way to get into gear: the high-octane performance was a 180-degree turn from their last three games.

On Athens Drive's side, Delaney Mize made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits. Mize was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one run.

In other batting news, Caroline Ross was incredible, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Lucy Whorton, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

Coming up, Broughton will welcome Leesville Road at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Pride will aim to continue their four-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last. As for Athens Drive, they will head out to square off against Wakefield at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
