Softball Recap: Meridian Continues Home Dominance on Wednesday

Meridian had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Wednesday. They blew past the Warrensburg-Latham Cardinals 11-1. The result was nothing new for the Hawks, who have now won ten contests by eight runs or more so far this season.

Ashley Schelling spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on four hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Meridian let Emma Childers and Julia Meisenhelter run wild. Childers went 2-for-3 with four RBI, one triple, and one run, while Meisenhelter went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. Those four RBI gave Childers a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Katelyn Clapp, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run.

Meridian's victory was their tenth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-3. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Warrensburg-Latham, their defeat ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-9.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Meridian will square off against Tuscola at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Warriors will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something the Hawks surely won't give up without a fight. As for Warrensburg-Latham, they will challenge Springfield at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Senators' pitching crew has only allowed two runs per game this season, so the Cardinals' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
