Basketball Recap: Nick Pellicano's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Sayre over Athens

Sayre played a tough contest on Wednesday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They lost 51-31 to the Athens Wildcats. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Redskins of the 67-43 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in January of 2024.

Several Redskins players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Nick Pellicano, who posted 14 points and five rebounds. Ryan Ressler was another key player, putting up six points and eight boards.

Even though they lost, Sayre smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in three consecutive matchups.

Adam Kemp had a dynamite game for Athens, going 6 for 11 on his way to 17 points. Kemp is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last six games he's played. Another player making a difference was James Friend, who earned six points along with 11 rebounds and six blocks.

Sayre's defeat dropped their record down to 12-7. As for Athens, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 7-10 record this season.

Sayre will head out to face off against Williamson at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Sayre is facing Williamson at the right time seeing as Williamson is stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Athens, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against Towanda at 7:15 p.m.
