West Harrison extended their losing streak to four on Friday, dropping them down to 10-9. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 10-9 heartbreaker at the hands of the Poplarville Hornets. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Hornets this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 7-3 on Tuesday.
West Harrison saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Carlos Pena, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Tyler Gazzier was another, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one double.
As for Poplarville, the win was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 14-7. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.8 runs over those games.
On Poplarville's side, they got a great performance from Luke Sones as he pitched 5.1 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Sones has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Ty Keys was incredible, going 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in February. The team also got some help courtesy of Brayden Lee, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
Looking ahead, West Harrison will square off against Ocean Springs at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Greyhounds' pitching crew has only allowed 1.9 runs per game this season, so the Hurricanes' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Poplarville, they have already played their next matchup, a 10-8 win against Oak Grove on the 28th.
