Softball Game Preview: Notre Dame Pioneers vs. Sulphur Golden Tors

The Notre Dame Pioneers will face off against the Sulphur Golden Tors at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Notre Dame's pitching crew has only allowed 2.4 runs per game this season, so Sulphur's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Notre Dame is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Louisiana's top teams: Brusly, who was ranked 11th at the time (Notre Dame was ranked 13th). The Pioneers fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 7-6 on Saturday. The contest marked the Pioneers' lowest-scoring match so far this season.

Malayna Daigle was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Cate Romero, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.

Meanwhile, Sulphur fell victim to Kaplan and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They fell just short of the Pirates by a score of 2-0. The Golden Tors' defeat signaled the end of their seven-game winning streak.

Claire Mellard was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she pitched six innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits.

Sulphur's loss dropped their record down to 16-12. As for Notre Dame, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 30-1.

Monday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Notre Dame hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .476. However, it's not like Sulphur struggles in that department as they've averaged .352. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.

Notre Dame took their victory against Sulphur in their previous meeting back in March of 2023 by a conclusive 11-0 score. Will the Pioneers repeat their success, or do the Golden Tors have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
