Baseball Recap: Franklin Quakers vs. Garfield Bulldogs
Franklin had lost three straight on the road, but on Wednesday they dropped down to 3-12 to make it four. They fell just short of the Garfield Bulldogs by a score of 1-0. The Quakers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bulldogs apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2025.
As for Garfield, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-12 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games.
For Garfield's part, not much got past Spencer Merwin, who gave up just a hit and racked up nine Ks to keep Franklin off the board. Merwin has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Garfield saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Malcolm Davis, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases. Those two stolen bases gave Davis a new career-high. Regulus Hesse-Webster also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Franklin will host Kent-Meridian at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Royals have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 16.75 runs per game on average), something the Quakers will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Garfield, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Shorewood at 3:45 p.m. on Friday. The Stormrays' pitching crew has only allowed 2.1 runs per game this season, so the Bulldogs' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
