Baseball Recap: Kodiak Takes Down Ranked Grace Christian

Kodiak faced Grace Christian in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. The Bears put the hurt on the Grizzlies with a sharp 15-1 win. With that victory, the Bears brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.

Max Sanford was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out ten batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Kodiak is 3-1 when Sanford allows one or fewer earned runs, but 2-7 otherwise. Sanford was also big at the plate, earning one RBI and two runs.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Zeke Saltonstall, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple. He is becoming a predictor of Kodiak's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 4-2 (and 1-6 when he doesn't). Gavin Peterson was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three runs and one double.

Kodiak kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are 3-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

Kodiak has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for Grace Christian, they dropped their record down to 1-5 with the loss, which was their third straight at home.

Coming up, Kodiak will take on Soldotna at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Stars will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something the Bears surely won't give up without a fight.
