Basketball Preview: Ellsworth Lancers vs. St. Mary Cathedral Snowbirds
The Ellsworth Lancers's homestand continues as they prepare to take on the St. Mary Cathedral Snowbirds at 7:00 p.m. on February 5th. Ellsworth has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last four games.
Ellsworth scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Friday. They breezed by North Michigan Christian Academy at home to the tune of 75-32. The matchup was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 41-18.
It was another big night for Patrick Puroll, who shot 4-for-6 from long range and almost dropped a double-double on 23 points and nine rebounds. He hasn't dropped below two steals for four straight games. Another player making a difference was Evincio LaCount, who scored 18 points.
Meanwhile, it was close, but on Friday St. Mary Cathedral sidestepped the Ironmen for a 36-33 win. Despite the victory, that was the fewest points St. Mary Cathedral has scored all year.
Ellsworth's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-9. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.0 points per game. As for St. Mary Cathedral, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season.
Things could have been worse for Ellsworth, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 85-66 loss to the Snowbirds in their previous matchup back in January of 2023.
