Baseball Recap: Progreso Comes Up Short

Progreso had lost six straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Tuesday they dropped down to 1-11 to make it seven. They came up short against the Port Isabel Tarpons, falling 14-2. Having soared to a lofty 26 runs in the game before, the Red Ants couldn't push the score so high this time.

Progreso saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Clemente Torres, who went 1-for-2 with one double.

As for Port Isabel, the win snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 4-10-1 record. That 12-run margin sets a new team best for them this season.

On Port Isabel's side, Oro Rodriguez made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up just one earned run but no hits. Rodriguez has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those two hits gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Port Isabel let Armani Reyna and Jojo Martinez run wild. Reyna got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Martinez got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three RBI, one run, and one double. Reyna has become a key player for Port Isabel: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 1-9-1 otherwise. Canelo Alvarez was another key player, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs.

Coming up, Progreso will be playing at home against Raymondville at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Red Ants' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Bearkats have averaged an impressive 7.1 runs per game this season. As for Port Isabel, they will host La Feria at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
