Softball Recap: Manteo Victorious

While Manteo didn't have the best season last year (they finished 11-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They walked away with a 6-1 victory over the First Flight Nighthawks on Friday. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 4-0 last Tuesday.

Makenna Gray spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on three hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Bridgett Berry, who scored three runs and stole five bases while going 4-for-4. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kayla Austin, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

Manteo was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Manteo's record now sits at 6-3. As for First Flight, their loss dropped their record down to 3-2.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Manteo will head out to square off against Currituck County at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
