Basketball Recap: Apollo Snags Fourth Victory in Last Five Games

If Tolleson wanted to avenge their loss from the last time they played Apollo, they should've done a better job of containing Eliijah White. The Apollo Hawks snuck past the Tolleson Wolverines with a 63-58 victory on Friday thanks in part to White, who went 11 for 16 en route to 24 points along with seven assists and four steals. Thanks to that strong game, he now owns an excellent 46.5% field goal percentage.

The team also got some help courtesy of Joe Sumpter, who went 5 of 10 on his way to 10 points in addition to six rebounds and four steals. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in steals.

When it comes to explaining why Tolleson lost, don't look at Rico Blassingame. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 28 points and 13 boards. Blassingame has become a key player for Tolleson: the team is 8-4 when he posts at least ten rebounds, but 2-9 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Nuul Deng, who almost dropped a double-double on ten points and nine boards.

Apollo has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 12-11 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 63.8 points over those games. As for Tolleson, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-13 record this season.

Coming up, Apollo will challenge Shadow Ridge at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Apollo knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past five games -- so hopefully Shadow Ridge likes a good challenge. As for Tolleson, they will take on Valley Vista at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Tolleson is facing Valley Vista at the right time seeing as Valley Vista is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
