Flag Football Recap: Salinas Cowboys vs. St. Francis Sharks
Salinas was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They were a single point away from ending the streak, but they lost a 20-19 heartbreaker at the hands of the St. Francis Sharks. The Cowboys gained 152 more yards on the day, but it was the Sharks that made the best use of them.
Yareli Alcaraz threw for 393 yards and three TDs. Jaslyne Coronado was her top target, picking up 197 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.
St. Francis found their leader in sophomore Liliana Whitmeyer, who rushed for 42 yards and two scores, and also threw for 198 yards and one touchdown. Whitmeyer also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, making three total tackles and defending one pass in addition to snagging an interception.
Salinas' defeat dropped their record down to 9-7. As for St. Francis, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 17-3.
Salinas and St. Francis should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Cowboys (ranked 119th) will meet Watsonville (ranked 295th) at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, St. Francis will take on Alisal at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday with a big rank advantage (34 vs. 153).
