South Point dropped their record down to 7-7 on Tuesday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They lost 9-2 to the Russell Red Devils. The Pointers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Red Devils apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.
Kolton Layman was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Ethan Layne was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.
As for Russell, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 16-9. Considering they have won 11 matches by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
On Russell's side, Kyle Mokas made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts Mokas has posted since back in March. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Elijah Hankins, who went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Hayden McGuire, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Coming up, South Point will venture away from home to square off against Dawson-Bryant at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Hornets have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.5 runs per game on average), something the Pointers will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Russell, they will be playing at home against Fairview at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
