Soccer Game Preview: Belton vs. Wakeland

The Belton Tigers will challenge the Wakeland Wolverines on Thursday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Belton comes in on four and Wakeland on 12.

Belton is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. Their defense stepped up to hand Poteet a 4-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for Belton, who have now won 11 games by three goals or more so far this season.

Meanwhile, Wakeland narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Jacksonville 3-2. Given Wakeland's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas soccer rankings (they are ranked fifth, while Jacksonville are ranked 58th), the result on Tuesday wasn't entirely unexpected.

Wakeland's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 21-0-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they scored 28 goals over those six matchups. As for Belton, their win bumped their record up to 18-2-3.

Belton suffered a grim 10-0 defeat to Wakeland when the teams last played back in January of 2019. Can Belton avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
