Baseball Game Preview: West Point Pointers vs. Surry County Cougars

West Point is 0-3 against Surry County since March of 2017 but things could change on Monday. The Pointers will welcome the Cougars at 5:00 p.m.

West Point is headed into Monday's contest looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their ninth straight game dating back to last season on Thursday. They lost 10-0 to King William. The match marked the first time this year in which the Pointers were not able to get on the board.

Surry County came out on top against Greensville County last Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive seven-run seventh inning. The Cougars were the clear victors by a 14-1 margin over the Eagles. The Cougars haven't had any issues with the Eagles recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive victory against them.

Dalton Pierce and Tanner Keckler made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Pierce struck out nine batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and only one walk). Meanwhile, Keckler tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. That's the most strikeouts Pierce has posted since back in March of 2024. At bat, Pierce got on base in four of his five plate appearances with four stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI, while Keckler went 3-for-4 with six stolen bases, six RBI, and one run. That RBI marked the first that Pierce has brought in this season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jeremiah Lightfoot, who went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one double. Those two hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Mathew Johnson, who got on base in two of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI.

Surry County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .564. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

West Point's defeat dropped their record down to 0-8. As for Surry County, their win bumped their record up to 4-1.
