Football Recap: Rowan County Takes a Loss

Rowan County had lost six straight at home dating back to last season, but on Friday they dropped down to 1-4 to make it seven. They fell 28-21 to the Clay County Tigers. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Vikings of the 14-0 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in August of 2016.

When it comes to explaining why Rowan County lost, don't look at Matthew Hamilton. Despite the final result, he threw for 219 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also punched in one rushing score.

Clay County's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-3. Their offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

Clay County's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Trenton Maiden, who rushed for 90 yards and two TDs. Aiden Wagers was another key player, rushing for 52 yards and one score.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Rowan County will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Blazer at 7:30 p.m. on October 3. As for Clay County, they will venture away from home to challenge Rockcastle County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Tigers will need to watch out since the Rockets have now posted at least 31 points every time they've taken the field this season.
