Softball Recap: Buena Bulldogs vs. Newbury Park Panthers
Buena extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping their season record down to 8-17 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-4 heartbreaker at the hands of the Newbury Park Panthers. If the Bulldogs were looking for revenge after losing 5-2 to the Panthers when the teams met back in February of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.
As for Newbury Park, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 15-10 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.2 runs over those games.
For Newbury Park's part, they got a great performance from Veronica Wasserman as she struck out six batters over 4.2 innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits (and not a single walk).
At the plate, Janessa Gutierrez was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three runs, and one double. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Lily Johnson, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Buena does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Newbury Park, they will take on Oaks Christian at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams are headed into the matchup with plenty of momentum (the Panthers have won four straight at home, while the Lions won six straight on the road), something that'll have to change.
