Basketball Recap: Sophia Skinner's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Woodlawn over Newton

Woodlawn was the 51-46 winner over Newton when they last played one another back in December of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The Woodlawn Cardinals lost 64-41 to the Newton Eagles on Saturday. While losing is never fun, the Cardinals can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 308th, while the Eagles are ranked 100th).

Woodlawn's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sophia Skinner, who went 6 of 11 on her way to 14 points and six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of McKayla Owens, who posted four points.

Woodlawn moved to 9-6 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak. As for Newton, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests, which provided a nice bump to their 10-3 record this season.

A feisty cat fight will be fought when the Woodlawn Cardinals take on the Edwards County Lions at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. Newton and Mt. Carmel will round out the year against one another at at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Newton has been dominant on offense recently, having racked up an incredible 195 points over their last three matchups.
