The Sand Creek Scorpions will challenge the Gateway Olympians at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Sand Creek took a loss when they played away from home two weeks ago, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed last Friday. Sand Creek's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Elijah Brotherns led the charge by almost dropping a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. That's the most boards Brotherns has posted since back in December of 2024. Mathew Starks was another key player, almost dropping a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Meanwhile, Gateway came tearing into Thursday's game with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.3 points), and they left with even more momentum. They came within a single point of losing the streak, but they secured a 57-56 W against the Trojans.
Gateway's win came from a few key players Sand Creek will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Bryan Lozano, who en route to 14 points and seven boards. Thanks to that strong game, he now owns an excellent 46.3% shooting accuracy. Another player making a difference was Ahmed Mohammed, who put up 14 points and four steals.
Gateway smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in ten consecutive matches.
Sand Creek's victory was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-6. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.3 points over those games. As for Gateway, their win bumped their record up to 9-14.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Sand Creek has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 30.9 rebounds per game.
