Softball Game Preview: Summerfield Rebels vs. Calvin Cougars

Summerfield hasn't had much luck against Calvin recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Rebels will challenge the Cougars. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Summerfield is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Saturday. They put the hurt on Saline with a sharp 12-2 victory. Winning may never get old, but the Rebels sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.

Harrisonburg typically has all the answers at home, but on Saturday Calvin proved too difficult a challenge. They beat the Bulldogs by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 12-6. The win was familiar territory for the Cougars, who have now won four matchups in a row.

Haley Martin spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and four unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Kyleigh Blundell, who went 3-for-5 with one home run, six RBI, and two runs. Those six RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kylianne Barnes, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Summerfield's record is now 15-8. As for Calvin, their record now sits at 17-13.

Summerfield might still be hurting after the 10-0 loss they got from Calvin in their previous meeting back in April of 2022. Can the Rebels avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
