Jersey took a ten-run defeat the last time they faced off against Highland, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Panthers narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Bulldogs 2-1. For the Panthers, this counts as revenge for the 10-0 victory the Bulldogs walked away with the last time they faced one another back in May of 2024.

Paxton Weirich spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on two hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.

At the plate, Jersey's win was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Marley Cazier, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one run. That triple was Cazier's first of the season.

Jersey is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-4-1 record this season. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 1.25 runs across that stretch. As for Highland, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-8.

Jersey and Highland could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings. The Panthers (ranked 236th) will meet Triad (ranked 71st) at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Highland will face off against Waterloo at 4:30 p.m. on Monday with a big rank disadvantage (279 vs. 59).
